my body is a temple

my skin, my bones, blood and guts. My body has never quite felt like mine, from being raised in a conservative patriarchal community. Through body modifications such as piercings and tattoos, I can reclaim a sense of ownership over myself. Through abstraction, representational forms, and symbolism I can lend the viewer a glimpse at my own understanding of myself.

“Naps, Nebulas, and Neurons;” at the Your Name Here Gallery at 1001 Colors Headquarters, Walnut Hills.

My work, featured in the ‘Your Name Here’ Gallery is a bodily experience created during my summer fellowship with 1001 Colors. Under the mentorship of Daryl Mynthia Daniels. I used my thighs, face, and side torso to print acrylic paint onto the canvas, then through complex layering, created the pieces you see here! I explore my relationship with my body, and my healing journey that I have found through tattooing and piercing. Through marking my skin, I claim it as my own and claim it as something I am proud of!
